Description
Extremely Rare Nov. 17,1776 "Independence" Sword in Hand Note
Massachusetts November 17, 1776 36s PMG Choice Very Fine 35. This is the first genuine example that we have sold for any of the denominations of this issue. Needless to say, these are extremely rare in all grades. Another indication of their true rarity is the fact that the entire issue is unpriced in the new Newman reference. And in the Friedberg catalog, they are simply referred to as "very rare." This example is a beauty with excellent margins, ideal centering of both sides, sharp printing, and very strong signatures. A wonderful combination of high grade and rarity. On this issue, Paul Revere has modified his original engraved plate changing the date to November 17, 1776 and removing the words "MAGNA CHARTA" from the scroll in the soldier's hand and replacing them with the more appropriate word "INDEPENDENCE." This final Sword in Hand issue is the only one exhibiting this important and evocative change.Auction Info
