Description
California 1875 $10
Oakland, CA - $10 1875 Fr. 419 The Union NB Ch. # 2266Kelly's census indicates 26 Series 1875 Notes have been reported from all banks in California. The list of known survivors is a rough crew with more than half of the recorded survivors grading Fair to Fine. No Uncirculated notes are known, though three AUs are listed. That group of three AUs includes this note and a cursory look at this note reveals why it has been called AU on more than one occasion. Four hefty margins frame bright paper. The few folds that account for the grade are minor and so light they do not adversely affect the intricate design details. The back design is as bold and detailed as one will find for the type. Most recently, we sold an 1875 $20 in our September 2009 Long Beach Signature Auction. While it is a slightly scarcer denomination, it was graded Fine and realized $29,900. This piece is far superior in regards to condition but without seeing how the other two AUs in the census will stand up to the rigors of today's third party grading standards, we can't quite make the case for finest known. PCGS Very Fine 35PPQ.
