Lovely PCGS Extremely Fine 45PPQ $500 Montgomery

T2 $500 1861 PF-1 Cr. 2.
Although the T1 $1,000 has, for many years, ever-so-slightly overshadowed the T2 $500 from the same Montgomery issue, current census information indicates that the $500 has a very slight edge in rarity, as approximately 111 $500s are currently known as opposed to 118 reported $1,000s. This simply is a glorious example with deep inking throughout. James Smillie's engraving of "The Crossing" offers a simplistic view of life way back when. Anthony J. Guirot has endorsed the back in New Orleans on June 7, 1861. This piece must have been displayed, as the signatures of Clitherall and Elmore have faded a touch. When the Confederate Congress moved to the new seat of government in Richmond, Clitherall, a native of Alabama, decided not to go along. This decision caused the remaining 30 notes for this issue to be signed by Charles T. Jones, creating the elusive Cr. 2A variety. Lovely, PCGS Extremely Fine 45PPQ.
