Colonial Notes
Continental Currency May 10, 1775 $7 PMG Choice About Unc 58. A lovely, lightly handled $7 note, this is from the more challenging first Continental issue. Well-printed, this attractive example was signed by James Milligan and James Read.
Continental Currency May 9, 1776 $7 PMG Fine 12. John Sellers and Isaac Pearson signed this $7 note. This is one of the higher denominations from this overlooked issue. The emblem for this denomination illustrates a major sea storm and the motto is SERENABIT (it will be calm). Hall and Sellers printed these notes. Adhesive, seen at the corners on the back, was mentioned by PMG.
Continental Currency November 2, 1776 $3 PMG Choice Very Fine 35. The emblem on this $3 features an eagle and a heron fighting along with the motto EXITUS IN DUBIO EST (the outcome is in doubt). The nature print is skeletonized elm and maple fruit. Benjamin Levy and Benjamin Brannan were the signers. Although it was believed for many years that Continental Currency signer Benjamin Jacobs was Jewish, research has indicated that was incorrect and therefore that leaves Levy as the only Jewish signer. Hall and Sellers of Philadelphia printed these notes on paper containing mica flakes and blue threads. This example displays a tear repair as mentioned by PMG.
Continental Currency November 2, 1776 $3 PMG Very Fine 30. Boldly printed, this attractive example has decent margins and bold signatures. The signers were Robert Dorsey and Richard Cromwell. The emblem is very sharp on this $3 note.
Continental Currency November 2, 1776 $6 PMG Choice About Unc 58. The back, with a nature print of a buttercup, is particularly bold on this lightly handled $6 Continental. John Griffiths and William Aisquith signed this note. The border cuts were changed from "UNITED COLONIES" to "UNITED STATES" beginning with this issue. The motto is PERSEVERANDO (by perseverance). The emblem is a beaver gnawing down a tree.
Continental Currency September 26, 1778 $8 PMG Very Fine 20. Moderately circulated, this $8 note has nice margins. William Coats and Levi Budd were the signers of this example. The emblem shows strings of varying lengths on a harp representing the 13 Colonies. The motto is MAJORA MINORIBUS CONSONANT (the large colonies and the small colonies are in harmony).
Continental Currency September 26, 1778 $40 About New. This is a nice Continental note except for the fact that the paper has worn thin enough in one isolated spot to have caused a small hole.
Continental Currency September 26, 1778 $60 PMG Choice Fine 15. This issue saw the introduction of new emblems and border cuts on the $50 and $60 denominations that were designed by Francis Hopkinson. Hopkinson has been credited by many as a designer of the American flag and he was a signer of the Declaration of Independence. The print on the back is small archery items. William Stretch and John Leacock signed this note.
Continental Currency January 14, 1779 $3 Fine. Some rough edges and minor staining on this nicely signed Continental.
Continental Currency January 14, 1779 $4 PMG Very Good 10. This $4 is attractive for the grade and was signed by John Leacock and Robert A. Roberts. Splits were mentioned by PMG.
Massachusetts October 18, 1776 3d PMG Choice Fine 15. This well-printed example retains good eye appeal for the grade. Only 5143 of these notes were printed. Nehemiah Abbot signed this 3 pence note. Splits were mentioned by PMG.

Plate letter B is seen on this example that was signed by Jonathan Johnston, Richard Smith, and Joseph Smith. Only 6000 of these notes were printed by James Parker in Woodbridge.
North Carolina April 23, 1761 20s PCGS Apparent Very Good 10. Only 6506 pieces were printed, with all four signatures clearly seen on this example. Many endorsements are observed on the back. The apparent grade is due to tape repairs.
North Carolina December, 1771 £1 PCGS Apparent Very Fine 30. Many endorsements are found on the back of this note that has an apparent grade due to splits repaired. This example has the "I. ASHE" stamp on the back representing John Ashe, the Treasurer of the Southern District of North Carolina. The stamps are believed to have been a control feature and are usually found on the backs of the £1 notes and higher denominations.
North Carolina December, 1771 £3 PCGS Apparent Very Fine 25. This is a popular note with the Magna Charta vignette. This example has a dark vignette and only 3000 were printed. There is an edge tear at lower right and thus the apparent grade.
Pennsylvania October 1, 1773 20s PMG Choice About Unc 58 EPQ. These black and red notes were printed by Hall & Sellers on paper with mica flakes and blue fibers. This well-printed example contains the bold signatures of Benjamin Morgan, William Fisher, Jr. and Barnaby Barnes.

Rhode Island August 22, 1738 7s About New.
