Session 1
Colonial Notes
January 2, 1775, 5s, Connecticut, CT-175, VG. The overall grade of this piece is not at all impressive, but the grade is perhaps the least interesting fact about this note. It has been slit cancelled and is torn into three or four pieces, but has been sewn back together, using a page from an old Bible as backing. It was obviously backed before it was cancelled, and the page from the Bible is of contemporary style. This note likely represents an eighteenth century attempt to preserve the life of a piece of currency, and to hold it together for future use in circulation.
May 10, 1775, 40s, Connecticut, CT-182, VF, CC. A couple of minor splits are present, and a couple of tiny pieces are missing from the edges. The note is slit cancelled, and has also been pen cancelled.
June 7, 1776, 1s, Connecticut, CT-194, Fine. Several edge splits are present.
June 19, 1776, 6d, Connecticut, CT-205, Fine. There is a long horizontal tear that nearly bisects the note.
October 11, 1777, 7d, Connecticut, CT-218, VF. There is one minor margin tear that does not touch the design.
March 1, 1780, 1s/3d, Connecticut, CT-220, Fine, POC. This note appears finer, but there are several edge splits and tears.
March 1, 1780, 5s, Connecticut, CT-222, Fine. Several splits and a few small holes are present.
March 1, 1780, 10s, Connecticut, CT-223, XF, POC. There is a small edge tear on the right side.
July 1, 1780, 9d, Connecticut, CT-233, AU, POC. A nice note for the grade.
July 1, 1780, 9d, Connecticut, CT-233, XF, POC. A couple of small tears are present in the edges.
July 1, 1780, 2s/6d, Connecticut, CT-236, AU, POC. Problem-free for the grade.
July 1, 1780, 10s, Connecticut, CT-238, VF, POC. There are some minor edge tears, but the note retains nice eye appeal for the grade.
December 1, 1779, 2s/6d, Massachusetts, MA-269, VG. The note has the body of a higher grade, but it is torn in half and is repaired with tape on the reverse. A scarce issue that is seldom seen any finer.
May 5, 1780, $2, Massachusetts, MA-279, Choice AU, POC. A couple of light corner bends prevent a higher grade.
May 5, 1780, $20, Massachusetts, MA-285, AU, POC. A high grade circulated note that is slightly miscut.
