Description:
Serial Number One Chief
Fr. 275 $5 1899 Silver Certificate PCGS Apparent Choice About New 55.
A bold and well embossed overprint on this Chief note that features serial number K1. The $5 Onepapa design is ranked #10 in the book 100 Greatest American Currency Notes. Combine the desirability of the type and the popularity of the serial number one, and this is certainly one of the most coveted notes in United States currency collecting. The census shows three other serial number one Chiefs, though only one other can be considered available to collectors. The Fr. 277, serial number M1 is permanently impounded in the ANA's Bebee Collection exhibit and Fr. 276 serial number H1 was reported in the census but has never been offered publicly, leaving only the Fr. 271 B1 available to buyers. The note is a beautifully margined and attractive piece with a well executed design repair at the right end of the note. Just by chance, the first Bison printed and adorned with serial number one is also offered in this auction as part of the Greensboro Collection. Unless a single buyer takes home both of these trophy notes this evening, it is unlikely that these two serial number one rarities will ever appear in the same auction again.
