Unique in Collector Hands
Fr. 185l $500 1880 Legal Tender PMG Choice Very Fine 35.
When we sold this great note as part of the Dr. Edward & Joanne Dauer Collection, we used the following description: "Unique in collector's hands, this is one of just five Bruce-Roberts signed $500 Legals to exist. Of the other four, three are in the collections of Federal Reserve Banks, and one resides permanently in the Smithsonian Institution. This piece was originally lot 179 from the Barney Bluestone November 1944 sale of the Grinnell Collection. After that, it was owned by Robert Friedberg, and then Amon Carter. The Dauers acquired the note from the November 1985 Hickman & Oakes sale. This piece is illustrated both sides on page 133 of the Dauers' book, along with a brief biography of General Mansfield, who was killed at the battle of Antietam on September 17, 1862. PMG has noted, 'Splits' on their holder, but the splits are wholly within the margins and very minimal. The eye appeal of the note is excellent, the margins are broad, and the colors are bright and pleasing. No collector has had the opportunity to acquire a Fr. 185l in the past 22 years, and until tonight's buyer decides to sell, no one else will be afforded the opportunity." Tonight is the night referred to above and once again the collecting fraternity has the opportunity to acquire the sole Bruce-Roberts $500 Legal Tender in collectors hands. It realized $690,000 at that September 2007 auction, a number that is certainly within reach tonight.
