Scarce Tallahassee, Florida Territory $1 Post Office Money

Tallahassee, Florida Territory- Tallahassee Post Office $1 Circa 1837-39 Benice 105
During the Panic of 1837, often referred to as the Hard Times Era, specie was hoarded, requiring substitutes to be produced whether in the form of tokens or paper scrip. Such was the case in Tallahassee during this time period. William Hilliard served as Tallahassee's postmaster from 1837 to 1839 and issued scrip in order to make change. Postmaster General Amos Kendell mandated that all local postmasters were to settle their Washington accounts using specie and he refused to accept the locally issued scrip. Surviving examples are quite rare and highly desired by collectors. The more simplistically designed notes came from Morris/Printer Philadelphia. The more elaborately produced notes were the work of the New England Bank Note Co., Boston. This $1 note was the product of the New England Bank Note Co. A number of sailing ships, along with a steamboat and a covered wagon are seen in the central vignette that includes a scene of a sailing ship being loaded or unloaded with barrels. Hilliard's signature remains clearly visible on this note graded PCGS Apparent Very Fine 20, with small edge nicks cited as the reason for the apparent grade. Benice lists these pieces as R8, indicating one to three known examples. An important piece of Florida and postal history and quite scarce. On the rare occasion when these notes are offered, they always command strong prices.
