Winston, NC - $10 1882 Brown Back Fr. 490 The Wachovia NB Ch. # 2425
An excessively rare note from a bank that for many years represented the holy grail for collectors of Nationals from the Tarheel State. While four notes are listed in the census from this institution, which, as a National Bank, issued Series 1875's, Brown Backs and 1882 Date Backs only, all have been ensconced in either institutional holdings or very strong hands for many years, with the sole offering at public sale coming as part of a North Carolina collection offered as one lot (and unsold) in our 2010 Memphis sale. This note, which bears the signature of the bank's founder, W.A. Lemly, as president, is a brightly colored and evenly margined piece with excellent eye appeal, having been graded as Very Fine 25PPQ by PCGS. Any estimate here is simply a guess, as notes from this historically important bank have been prominent on the wish lists of every North Carolina collector for generations, but our best surmise here is a realization in the vicinity of...
