Description:
Rare & Lovely Cr. 20 Alabama $50
Montgomery, AL- The State of Alabama $50 Cr. 20
An extremely rare note whose issue is, as Shull notes, "shrouded in uncertainty." This was the only Alabama state issue payable only in Confederate Treasury Notes issued after February 17, 1864, dating this issue to later in 1864 or even early 1865. Shull lists this as a Rarity-10 (5-15 known) and succinctly notes "Very Rare" without listing a value. The last example we sold was back in 2001 when we auctioned the celebrated Alabama collection of Dr. Walter B. Jones, and his example was damaged and had a huge rust stain. This piece, graded PCGS About New 50, is as nice as any we've seen or heard of.
