Description:
Richmond, VA- Commonwealth of Virginia £20, 16s, 8d June 30, 1879 Cr. 1879A
These notes, which were bearer instruments payable to anyone presenting them, were issued pursuant to an act of the Virginia legislature passed in March of 1879 which settled the question of responsibility for the Commonwealth's pre-war debt between Virginia and West Virginia, which had become a state after breaking away from Virginia in 1863. All of these notes are quite rare, with specimens known payable in both dollars and pounds sterling, likely representing compensation for English investors who had purchased debt issues of the Commonwealth denominated in sterling.
