Colorful 1891 $100 Silver Certificate
Fr. 344 $100 1891 Silver Certificate PCGS Apparent Very Fine 30.
Previously described in our 2004 FUN Signature Currency Auction, "A beautifully margined James Monroe $100 Silver with exceptional color. Fewer than 30 examples are known in all grades combined, with only a single uncirculated note reported that has been unseen since 1965. Six of the known notes are in government hands. This note has a few tiny pinholes and an inconspicuous repair to the right of the vignette. All would disappear completely in the hands of the proper restorer, which would leave the note a very handsome Choice Very Fine example." This piece was locked away since that offering and little has changed. The note is the same vibrantly colored piece with a couple of repairs, and our records indicate no additional examples have been reported. Earlier this year a PCGS Apparent 25 sold for $25,300.
