Description:
Newly Discovered $10 Silver Certificate Star- One of Three Known for the Type
Fr. 303 $10 1908 Silver Certificate Star Note PMG Very Good 10 Net.
An incredible new star note discovery which is offered here to the collecting public for the very first time. With the exception of the unique $10 Federal Reserve Bank Note, $10 Silver Certificates represent the single rarest series for star notes, with a reported population of only two pieces, a single example each of the Fr. 303 star, which has been off the market for at least two decades, and a lone Fr. 304 star, which has disappeared from public view after having been sold as part of the Bernard Schaaf collection in 1992. This piece is of course new to the census, and offers collectors their first chance in twenty years to obtain a $10 Silver Certificate star example. PMG has chosen to net grade this piece because of splits, which are negligible and affect the margins only, and, in their inimitable style, have chosen to doubly penalize the note by lowering the grade as well, as the note is an old-time Very Good-Fine, which, lacking the splits, would almost certainly have gone into a Fine 12 holder. The last star note of this rarity we had to offer was a PMG Fine 12 Fr. 123 Legal star, which is one of three stars known for the type, and which realized $92,000 in January of 2009. This piece is every bit its equal in rarity, and, when the bidding stops tonight, may well make our estimate look incredibly conservative.
